/Today is Harper Lee’s birthday — she was born in Monroeville, Alabama on August 28, 1926. In this rare interview, recorded in 1964, she spoke about To Kill a Mockingbird (its extraordinary success left her with “sheer numbness,” she says, “hit over the head, knocked cold”); the movie Hollywood made out of it (she had “nothing but gratitude” for the filmmakers, she says); and her native South (‘a region of storytellers, naturally”).
